General Election Day for all municipalities in the Province of Ontario is Monday, October 25, 2010 [Bill 212, Good Government Act 2009]. On this day voters in the Town of LaSalle will elect a Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Town Council members, and School Board Trustees to represent them in this community for the next four (4) years. The term of office is December 1, 2010 to November 30, 2014. View the current list of Candidates This year the Town of LaSalle will be adopting the "Mail-In Voting" method. Compliance Audit Committee Application The Compliance Audit Committee Application is now available for download (pdf). Completed applications can be hand-delivered or sent by regular mail, fax or email and must be received by 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 9, 2010. Changes to the Municipal Election Act: An amendment to the Municipal Elections Act, Bill 212, Good Government Act 2009 was introduced in the Ontario Legislature to streamline local government elections. This Bill received Royal Assent on December 15, 2009. The changes to the Municipal Elections Act make local elections more transparent, accountable and efficient. It also promotes greater accessibility for voters and candidates with disabilities and creates a more level playing field for all candidates. Highlights of Bill 212:
Candidates Persons wishing to seek elected municipal or local school board office should read the relevant legislation and regulations for qualifications required for the office, e.g. the Municipal Act, 2001, the Education Act, and the Municipal Elections Act, 1996. It is the responsibility of the candidate to determine whether he or she is qualified to be elected to and hold the office. Candidates can only be nominated for one municipal office in the Province of Ontario at a time. Qualifications – Municipal Office A candidate for municipal office must, upon nomination, be a qualified municipal elector and fulfill all of the following requirements:
Note: A candidate, if nominated, must remain qualified throughout the election and, if elected, throughout the term of office. School board candidates should confirm that they have the qualifications described in s.219 of the Education Act.
