Millennium Garden

Millennium GardenIn January of 1999, the Millennium Committee was formed with an idea in mind to leave a lasting legacy for generations to come. This idea came in the form of a garden, thought up by Committee members Jean Forbes and Georgina Burns.

The next task was to find a suitable location for the garden. Gil Maure park was chosen as the final location for the project. The project consists of ten garden beds interwoven by connecting footpaths with a water feature as the focal point. The water feature stands for metaphorically as our students link to their history as a river settlement.

Each garden is designated to a local school symbolizing diversity within commonality. Footpaths leading from the central water feature in all directions symbolize the future that lies beyond.

The location of the Millennium Garden is also one of historical significance. The first settlers of LaSalle arrived there by boat some 300 years ago.

LaSalle, Ontario has traditionally been symbolic of the common Canadian ideology where the blending of French, English and other cultures spans three hundred years of history. The design of the garden reflects that collective spirit where diversity has thrived within a united whole.
